SuperDuper and External Hard Drive Rant

SuperDuper and External Hard Drive Rant from Elsie Escobar on Vimeo.

So as of this moment as I’m hastily writing this post I have not addressed any of the issues that I speak of in the video. Welcome to Day 4 of NaVloPoMo (November video blogging month!)

*sigh*

Troubleshooting is for people who aren’t mothers to a one year old.

Upon coming home from teaching I:

  • Cleaned up after Hunter’s dinner
  • Cleaned up Hunter’s play area
  • Hunter shower time
  • Hunter put to bed
  • Swept and tidied up the homestead (while quickly editing video above and uploading it. iMovie rocks for that)
  • Final preparations for interview tomorrow with Michael Londra for iProng Mag

Yea, no time to even attempt to launch SuperDuper again…Before shutting down computer I attempted to launch it 3x and not once did it actually load…regarding the external HD, no clue what’s going on. It’s a 1.5 TB Free Agent Desk External Drive by Seagate. Boo

The Baby and "Beyond A Star" NaVloPoMo Day 5

The Baby and “Beyond A Star” from Elsie Escobar on Vimeo.

Today I had the opportunity to interview the lovely Michael Londra for iProng Magazine. He is absolutely a lovely person. In order to prepare for the interview, I listened to his album “Beyond A Star” in the late afternoon. Hunter has really taken a liking to the music. She plays so calmly while it’s playing and lately she crawls over to where the CD player is and starts dancing :) It’s pretty cute!

Although it’s a holiday album, it’s not your typical ‘holiday’ album. It’s a real pleasure to put it on and enjoy a slow and magical Winter arrival.

Stay tuned for the interview in iProng Magazine to learn more about it!

SuperDuper and External Hard Drive: Follow Up, I'm Backed Up!!!! Yippeeee :D

SuperDuper backup
Uploaded with plasq’s Skitch!

What in the world is up with the FreeAgent Desk Seagate Drive? It seems that the external HD has some files or software in there that messes things up when wanting to format the drive for Mac OS extended (journaled). Bizzarro. Here’s a tiny time line of my day with sprinkles of troubleshooting along the way.

10 am Up, exhausted (I know LATE, but the mighty Hunter decided to nurse basically throughout the night….non stop almost….I know)

10:30-11:30 am Breakfast for Hunter and I. Hunter clean up.

11:30-12:30 Erica, our lovely babysitter came over to watch Hunter while I interviewed Michael Londra. Was able to read comments and tweets regarding my rant yesterday

1 pm- 2:30 pm Hunter fell asleep!!!! At this time, I got a chance to email Victor Cajiao and Dave Nanian from SuperDuper. I also got on the phone with a new journalist/documentary producer that I’m going to be working with and had to meet today. Finally was able to get into SuperDuper and begin to see that the trouble was all about the HD. The fabulous Victor called me and he talked me through what needed to be done. Right as I was about to attempt to do what Victor told me to do, Hunter woke up.

2:30-3:30 pm Had to get Hunter and myself ready to go out in the mid forties windy weather to meet with journalist at the Co-op, and walked to the Co-op.

3:30-5:30 pm Meeting at the Co-op + Lunch

5:30-6:30 pm Was finally able to focus a bit on the formating issue at hand as Hunter’s Daddy had gotten her some new Elmo DVD’s and I put one on as I dove into disk utility. I found that there were still troubles and decided to call Victor to speak with him. We had a productive conversation solving the problem.

6:30 pm Finally backed up with SuperDuper!

What was the problem: After partitioning the ext HD, only one partition formatted properly, the other one was unable to be verified or repaired:

I ended up having to erase the entire drive and repartion again. The second time the first partition formatted properly to for Mac OS extended (journaled) but the second one ‘refused’. It would only accept being formatted as a FAT32.

What solved the problem? I erased the drive again and this time partitioned it into 3 partitions. I made the 3rd partition as small as I could make it. For whatever reason this solved the problem. So now I have 3 partitions….Not exactly what I wanted but am just happy that I was able to back up, back up and back up!
I’m still not sure what in the world was going on. It just makes me wanna back up on the cloud…I just didn’t want to keep spending more money!
